Summary of Experience
Shiv is a barrister and accredited civil and commercial mediator.
His practice spans both civil and criminal work and most of his work is international in nature. He has experience acting both alongside and against teams of barristers and global law firms.
He has run high-value international commercial arbitrations (ICC and UNCITRAL rules) and advised on bilateral investment treaty claims. He has also represented, as trial counsel, corporate defendants prosecuted by the Serious Fraud Office for White Collar criminal offences.
In addition to his litigation practice, he has planned and coordinated multi-jurisdictional internal corporate investigations involving a consideration of international anti-corruption legislation. He has extensive experience in the review, design and implementation of bespoke corporate compliance programs and has delivered workshops and training for General Counsel and senior compliance personnel at some of the world’s largest companies.
Shiv has also led multidisciplinary teams engaged in advising upon and executing adequate procedures to prevent bribery within the meaning of Section 7 of the UK Bribery Act for multinationals facing investigation by the US Department of Justice, the SFO and Multi-Lateral Development Banks. H has on a number of occasions in recent years, given expert witness testimony and been cross-examined in relation to the Bribery Act and criminal procedure at international commercial arbitrations.
Shiv is increasingly engaged in matters relating to reputation management, corporate intelligence and counter-party risk.
In recent years, he has provided on-the-ground advice and support in the USA, China, India, UAE, France, Switzerland, South Africa and the Caribbean.
Shiv is a scholar of Jesus College, Cambridge and represented the university at cricket. He was elected to the Bar Council in 2016, acts as mentor for the Social Mobility Foundation and is a governor of an OFSTED “outstanding” rated Infant and Junior school in North London. Prior to the Bar he sat as a magistrate and worked for a member of the Cabinet. He was awarded the Queen Mother Scholarship and Harmsworth Entrance Exhibition by Middle Temple.
